Welcome to ANREP!
In Memoriam, Bob Wheeler
Long time member Robert Aaron Wheeler, 57, passed away June 29, 2009, at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital after a short battle with cancer. Bob was the chair of the local arrangements committee for the 2010 ANREP conference. Bob came to Fairbanks, Alaska in 1997 and worked as a forestry extension specialist for the University of Alaska Cooperative Extension Service. He was active in ANREP since its inception in the late 1990’s. He attended every ANREP annual conference.
Bob’s ideas and enthusiasm were contagious. One of Bob’s ideas was to host an ANREP conference in Fairbanks. He first approached the individual board members during the 2006 ANREP meeting in Utah. He persisted and submitted a proposal just after the 2008 meeting in Madison. Bob was thrilled that ANREP will be holding its meeting in Alaska. His vision, leadership and direction has given us a path to follow for the 2010 meeting.
Bob had a broad range of work related interests which included but were not limited to working with Alaska native peoples, horticulture, cold climate housing, climate change and traditional forestry. He loved to fish and produced an annual calendar of fishing. He also was an active runner. Earlier this year, as a kidney transplant survivor he participated in a marathon.
Bob is survived by his wife, Beverly; his father; his sister; two brothers; and their families.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be sent in Bob’s name to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, 9221 Ward Parkway Suite 400 Kansas City Missouri or http://www.pkdcure.org
