Session: Concurrent session A3: Model Teaching Methods
In recent years, web-based instruction has increased rapidly, both in the categories of formal, moderated classes with designated start and end dates, and in unmoderated, voluntary, self-paced learning modules. This recent growth has prompted questions about the quality and effectiveness ofthe course content. In response, guidelines for developing successful and high quality formal courses have been presented, however, these guidelines apply mainly to formal, moderated courses. These guidelines include suggestions such as providing users with timely feedback and requiring interaction among participants; these strategies are not possible in stand-alone, self-paced learning modules, where learners do not interact with a facilitator.
We have sought to adapt the principles of successful and highquality online courses for stand-alone, self-paced learning modules. Through summative evaluations and follow-up surveys, we have assessed the efficacy of self-paced learning modules developed around a variety of natural resource issues. We have exploredthree main questions: whether our users are learning from the modules; whether users are retaining knowledge gained from the modules over several months; and whether information presented in the modules has affected their perspectives or behaviors.
In this presentation, we will share the features of our modules that had the greatest impacts on learning. We will also present what our users found to be most enjoyable, what kept them engaged, and what motivated them to continue to work through the modules on their own time. Finally, we will summarize our findings regarding the features of effective stand-alone learning modules.
