Session: Concurrent session C4: Forestry
The Southern Pine Beetle (SPB) (Dendroctonus frontalis) is the most damaging of all pests in the southern forests, resulting in millions of dollars of timber damage region wide annually. In response to this threat, the US Forest Service, Southern Region Forest Health Protection, initiated a region wide project to reduce the threat of the SPB in 2001.
The Mississippi project is unique in that it combines the resources of the MSU Extension Service, with the Mississippi Forestry Commission, and US Forest Service to educate landowners, loggers, and professional foresters about SPB biology and management. Forest stand management activities which reduce the threat of the SPB are also discussed in these educational programs. In addition, a pine thinning cost share program has been initiated to further the over goal of increasing the number of acres thinned on the ground. The overall project will be presented with program success, and future directions. Ways in which other state extension forestry and natural resources programs can tap into this and other state funding sources will be discussed.
