(55) Sustaining Family Forestlands Through Improved Timber Sales: Applying the Extension Model

Steve Bowers, Oregon State University-Lane County Extension Service, Eugene, OR

Concurrent Session: C4:  Forestry

The Mission Statement of the Oregon State University Extension Service is to engage the people of Oregon with research-based knowledge and education, focusing on strengthening communities and economies, sustaining natural resources, and promoting healthy families and individuals. The best way to achieve these goals is providing incentives to keep these family forestlands intact. What better incentive than financial returns on forestland activities and investments.

This challenge is addressed by a presentation that applies the extension model through a linkage of teaching, scholarship, and service. I will highlight the program of work I have developed and presented over the last 10 years. Impacts and evaluations will be addressed that displays the effectiveness of these various programs and activities.

The focus of my program is timber and log sales, which is the primary method of generating financial returns for family forestlands. Building on my education, experience in the forestry industry and as a family forestland owner, I have addressed the issues that make this topic a challenge for educators to understand and develop effective program opportunities.

A flow chart will be presented that displays the linkages of programs and activities to consider when conducting a successful timber or log sale. Effective educational programs have been supported by scholarly activities that include being lead or co-author of seven Extension Circulars, a computer program and a woodland roads manual.

Developed teaching materials include four Powerpointâ„¢ presentations and several derivatives utilizing information from these programs and The Woodland Stick, a timber measurement tool designed specifically for family forestland owners.

Finally, service includes a Log Buyers Directory: a comprehensive directory of timber and log buyers in Oregon, southwest Washington, western Idaho and northern California. Finally, my industry linkages and personal forestland experience are important components for successful one-on-one contacts with family forestland owners.
