Fire Science and Fire Management in Southern Forests: A workshop and fieldtrip
This workshop's purpose is to bring together research who are conducting research on fire ecology/management and the forest managers who face the ongoing problems of fire management/suppression in the region. The workshop affords opportunities to: (1) provide managers with early results from research projects, (2) provide researchers with feedback on the potential usefulness of findings, (3) discuss future research efforts that could address management and policy needs, and (4) develop closer ties between the fire research and fire management communities.

Background:
Fire defines one of the greatest challenges to effective forest ecosystem management in the southern U. S. Most forest types are fire-adapted, and fire suppression has altered these systems. Much of the forested lanscape is heavily populated, and as growth proceeds in the region this wildland-urban interface continues to grow. The cost of wildfire can be extremely high in the South, especially where both human-built and natural elements of the landscape are at risk. Recent fire events, especially in Florida, drive home these issues and emphasize that they will only become more important and complex as time goes on.
In response to the increased concerns regarding fire the southern forest, the USDA Forest Service, Southern Research Station has initiated a series of research projects. These are funded through the National Fire Plan and the Joint Fire Sciences Program. Research topics include the ecology, economics and risk-reducing efficacy of various fire treatments, and the program intends to develop a better understanding of fire's role in these heavily modified forests as well as to support more effective forest management in the region.

Field trip:
A field trip will be conducted to view the Fire and Fire Surrogate Treatment Studies at Myakka River State Park. Widespread treatments are needed to restore ecological integrity and reduce the high risk of uncharacteristically severe and destructive wild fires in many southern forests. Among possible treatments, however, the appropriate balance among cutting, mechanical fuel treatments and prescribed fire is often unclear. The field trip will highlight treatments designed to provide information about the consequences and costs of alternative management practices involving fire and mechanical, that is fire surrogate treatments, in the southern saw palmetto/gallberry fuel complex. Participants will receive information and view the initial effects (first year responses), of burning, burning plus chopping and burning plus mowing on: tree growth and mortality, understory vegetation, birds, small mammals, bark beetles, root diseases, soils and fuels.
