Always Getting Ready - Oscar Kawagley

The Mother Earth ecological system is very complex to express it simply. We, as indigenous people, have a deeper knowledge and understanding of the web of life. But, there is much that we do not know and understand especially with the fast paced changes that are taking place. We, as Alaska Native people, have always had the proactive mindset in which we got our hunting tools and ‘catching devices’ repaired and ready for use in the changing seasons. We tried to anticipate change due to people and animal food availability, weather anomalies, floods or drought, and so forth. Our ancestors used the sense-makers of Nature to guide them. We don’t do this anymore! We need to be reminded to revive this practice. Are you as natural resource professionals secure in knowing enough about ecology to do the things that you do? Then, why are you still monitoring and collecting data on change now? The resources could be used for more life sustainable activities that entail working with Nature. To empower ourselves, we must work to gain knowledge of who we are and how environment shapes our lives and how we can change it for life and sustainability. Presentation starts in the 24th minute.
