Presidents Report
“If you can attend only one professional development event during the year, it should be the ANREP Conference, May 16 to 19, 2004.” (ANREP Executive Committee)
The 4th ANREP Conference is shaping up to be another great one. We haven’t finished reviewing the abstracts yet, but our first impression is that we have a wide variety of topics representing outstanding programming from natural resource people across the country. The learning and networking potentials of this conference look like they will be challenging those of the first three ANREP conferences. The site alone is enough reason to attend. I spent four wonderful years attending college, working, playing and enjoying the beautiful countryside in this area. The 1,650-acre Oglebay Resort and Conference Center offers many free-time opportunities for you and your families.
David Waterman, Jim Johnson and others at Virginia Tech are doing an excellent job of lining up some terrific educational tours. They will get all of the details online as soon as final arrangements are made. Keep an eye on this site for other updates as well. 2003 ANREP Membership Meeting
The annual membership meeting was held in conjunction with the Extension Galaxy Conference in Salt Lake City, UT, September 21, 2003. Due to technical difficulties the teleconference connection was not made possible for the members at large. Some highlights are that Wisconsin, Georgia, New York and Florida now have state chapters. Increasingly, Extension Professionals around the country are able to choose ANREP as their state and national professional association. Seventeen states still need a state champion.
Discussion continued at the ANREP breakfast meeting on 9/25/03. It was recommended that breakouts at the 2004 annual meeting focus on key and emerging issues, not disciplines. State Extension directors need to know the ANREP State Conference dates so they can support members to attend. There is a potential to co-host future national conferences with community development. New technology will allow ANREP members to attend ‘latitude’ meetings, with closer connections with ECOP on national issues.

2004 JCEP Regional Meetings
The 2004 meeting theme for the Join Council of Extension Professionals is “Building the Extension System of the Future”. One major topic of discussion will be the Leadership Advisory Council 2003 Report from ECOP. Dates and locations are as follows:
Northeast region Baltimore, MD January 29-31, 2004
Southern region Atlanta, GA February 1-3, 2004
Western region Las Vegas, NV February 19-21,2004
North central region Chicago, IL February 22-24, 2004
Why Not Host in 2006?
Your state could host the 2006 ANREP national Conference. Proposals must be submitted to the Executive Board one month prior to the 2004 Conference this May (that means by April 1, 2004). Guidelines for submission will be sent out to the membership in the near future.

2003 Educational Materials Awards
ANREP recently honored members who produced educational materials that were judged as outstanding by a panel of at least three judges per category, and were evaluated against specific criteria that emphasized usefulness to a target audience, innovativeness, and potential educational impact. Judging was done by ANREP members from Florida, Montana, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont, with Bruce Wilkins coordinating.

News From Sea Grant Extension
Land and Sea Grant Extension workers held a successful symposium and planning meeting at the American Fisheries Society annual meeting in Quebec City, July 12-14. There were 19 people present, representing nine states and three federal agencies. Plans are being made for increasing Extension’s visibility at future AFS meetings, particularly with student members.

Cooperative Extension Natural Resources Leadership Course
This award-winning program from Texas Extension will graduate its 90th Extension Agent in October. The course began as an effort to acquaint County Agricultural, Family and Consumer Science, and 4-H Agents to natural resources issues facing the state, to help them advise clientele on using natural resources as alternative sources of income, and to better equip the agents to deal with environmental regulatory issues. Biscayne Bay Bubbles
"Biscayne Bubbles" are a collection of weekly articles containing scientific, ecological, and societal facts about Biscayne Bay. The goal is to increase awareness and education to the general public and school children. Collaborators include Florida Sea Grant and Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML). GPS, GIS and Watershed Education in the Potomac/Shenandoah Valleys
Two projects are underway in Virginia to help K-12 teachers and 4-H Leaders involve youth in a meaningful watershed experience, as outlined by the Chesapeake 2000 agreement between Bay governors. Restoring the Chesapeake provides free hardwood seedlings and identifies subwatersheds where planting efforts are needed most. The NOAA watershed project provides historic aerial photos and GPS receivers so that students can map land use changes to their communities.

Rock River Coalition Issue Team
This group in Wisconsin identifies and addresses the important issues in their basin. Members include federal, state, county agency staff, University faculty and staff, elected officials, private consultants, lake, river, environmental and conservation group members, Farm Bureau, businessmen, farmers and interested citizens. Accomplishments include an award-winning karst brochure to support drinking water education, citizen monitoring of streams with significant extramural support, and native restoration of shorelines.
